2017 Session Summaries—Day One
Wednesday, May 3
GMM attendees gathered during the afternoon of Wednesday, May 3, to begin ICI’s 59th Annual General Membership Meeting. Opening speeches from industry leaders set the agenda, followed by an engaging Q&A during the GMM Policy Forum. The day ended with a reception and Legal Forum presentations held in the Exhibit Hall.
Welcome and Opening Remarks
GMM Planning Committee Chairman James McNamara, president and CEO of Goldman Sachs Mutual Funds, set the stage for the meeting, discussing the changing global regulatory environment and asking pointed questions about issues that could affect investors and the fund industry.
ICI Chairman William “Ted” Truscott, CEO of Columbia Threadneedle Investments, reflected on the US retirement system. He noted that although the system is working well, it could be improved by bringing benefits to even more Americans, for example, by taking measures to expand employer-sponsored retirement plan coverage and promote individual retirement accounts (IRAs).
GMM Policy Forum
Stanley McChrystal—General (Ret.), US Army, and cofounder and partner at the McChrystal Group—participated in a lively discussion with ICI President and CEO Paul Schott Stevens on the need for adaptability and flexibility on the battlefield and in business. During his time fighting insurgents in Iraq, McChrystal noted, he faced fast-changing conditions that required quick thinking and tactical moves. But succeeding in any complex and shifting situation also requires a strategy that encompasses diverse perspectives and works to solve as many concerns as possible.
