2018 Session Summaries—Day Two

Wednesday, May 23

After a morning of interactive discussion sessions held during breakfast, followed by an opening address from ICI Chairman William F. “Ted” Truscott, attendees heard a wide range of analysis, perspective, and advice from industry leaders, market analysts, investment managers, financial advisers, and other experts. Headlining the day’s events was a keynote exchange between Pulitzer Prize–winning author and presidential historian Jon Meacham and ICI President and CEO Paul Schott Stevens. The day wrapped up with the 2018 GMM dinner event, which took place at the renowned Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Chairman’s Address

ICI Chairman William “Ted” Truscott, CEO of Columbia Threadneedle Investments, reflected on the myths surrounding fund investors’ behavior, explaining that the facts dispel the myths about investors fleeing the market in response to market volatility.

Facing the Future: Fresh Perspectives

Does the fund industry need to rethink its traditional operating models? Industry leaders shared their views on this question and others, while examining client expectations. Topics included transparency in communication, technology, and talent building.
Yie-Hsin Hung, CEO of New York Life Investment Management, moderated the panel, which included participants Jillian DelSignore, head of ETF distribution at J.P. Morgan; Kirk Moore, head of global research at Columbia Threadneedle Investments; and Matthew O’Connor, president of American Funds Distributors, and director of North American Distribution for Capital Group.

Investing Today: Insights, Risks, and More

At this session, leading investment strategists discussed key investment opportunities and product trends, examining market cycles, emerging and global markets, and diversity in the industry. Marie Chandoha, president and CEO of Charles Schwab Investment Management, moderated the panel, which included Rupal Bhansali, chief investment officer of international and global equities at Ariel Investments; Sarah Ketterer, CEO and cofounder of Causeway Capital Management; and Teresa Kong, portfolio manager at Matthews Asia.

Luncheon with Keynote Speaker Jon Meacham

Pulitzer Prize–winning author and presidential historian Jon Meacham engaged in a lively discourse with ICI President and CEO Paul Schott Stevens about Meacham’s bestselling book, The Soul of America, and reflected on the virtues that have defined America’s best eras.

Cross-Border Challenges and the Global Convergence of Regulatory Matters

In this session, experts in global asset management shared their perspectives on regulatory developments, related business challenges, and client concerns worldwide. They touched on integration in local and global markets, private equity, the effects of Brexit, and the value added by asset management. The panel was moderated by Martin Flanagan, president and CEO of Invesco, and included participants David Hunt, president and CEO of PGIM; David J. Semaya, executive advisor of Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management, and former chairman of Nikko Asset Management; and Andreas Utermann, CEO of Allianz Global Investors.

Cybersecurity Concerns: How to Protect Fund Shareholders

In this session, Chad Renfro, head of enterprise cybersecurity at Fidelity Investments, gave a spirited presentation to the audience before engaging in a discussion with GMM Planning Committee Chairman Stuart Parker, president and CEO of PGIM. Renfro described the evolution of cybercrime and cryptocurrency, noted ways of decreasing and preventing cyberthreats, and emphasized the importance of conducting tabletop exercises to help firms address and recover from real incidents.
