Opportunities in the ETF Market

The global exchange-traded fund (ETF) market reached nearly $8 trillion at the end of 2020 and the growth shows no sign of abating. As more managers look to enter an increasingly crowded marketplace, understanding the trends can help firms refine their product strategies. In this session, we will discuss the product and distribution trends that are driving the ETF market and how managers can find opportunities to grow their ETF business.

  • Where are the assets going? What type of products are winning?
  • What distribution trends are developing and are there new routes to market? How are the institutional and retail markets different?
  • What does the future hold for the semi-transparent ETF?
  • What’s the best route to market for new entrants?

RegTech: Where Are We Today on the Regulatory Journey?

More than 12 years after the global financial crisis and market downturn that spurred a flurry of global regulations, the investment management industry is still faced with data and reporting challenges to comply with global regulatory mandates. A lot has happened in these 12 years and the asset servicing industry has come a long way, but the postcrisis appetite for data and regulatory insight continues to demand a strategic, agile, and efficient response. As the regulators continue to regulate, fund and servicers continue to react. What is informing current day regulatory rules and what is the competitive and operational impact to funds, asset managers, and service providers? This panel will discuss the road behind us, where we are today, and the road ahead—all part of the ongoing regulatory journey.

Digital Assets and Digital Asset Securities: Bitcoin, Ripple, and Everything in Between

Investors want exposure to bitcoin, and several advisers are seeking SEC approval for a registered, exchange-traded product that could allow investors—including retail investors—to get that access without having to purchase bitcoin directly. But there are other types of digital assets and digital asset securities. What are the differences among them, what types of products might be used to facilitate investments in these instruments, and what are the challenges to bringing those products to market? How can sponsors ensure that investors are adequately protected? In this session, we will consider possible use of digital assets and digital asset securities in pooled investment vehicles, the SEC’s current views on custody of digital asset securities, the availability and limitations of alternative trading systems that transact in digital asset securities, and some of the operational opportunities presented by blockchain technology.

How Do I Know I Have Done Enough?

This is the question that keeps compliance professionals up at night. Firms are required to make “reasonable” efforts to prevent and detect compliance violations—but determining what is “reasonable” is an ongoing challenge. The answer to this will determine the nature and scope of a testing program, the depth and breadth of disclosures, and the size of compliance budget.

This session will help guide you in assessing whether your efforts to develop, test, and enforce a firm-specific compliance program can be considered reasonable!
